Rush-Hour Read: The Link Between Traffic Congestion and Health

Most people know that traffic jams are bad for the environment and people’s free time, but one under-reported aspect of congestion is the toll that it takes on people’s health. While commuting by car is one of the activities that people enjoy the least, the tailpipe exhaust from traffic congestion may also be worth worrying about. Some scientists are increasingly finding a link between vehicle exhaust with brain-cell damage and higher levels of autism. The data is relatively new and more research needs to be done, the news is just another reason to pursue transportation policy that tries to shift some commuters to using other forms of transport to get to work.
