The ideas and principles within the complete streets movement are consistently evolving and progressing. Within the City of Los Angeles, for example, the Bicycle Master Plan was adopted in early 2011 and the Mobility Element of the City General Plan is currently being updated. On a state level, 2011 is the first full year since the passing of the Caltrans Complete Streets Act. The LA Chapter of Young Professionals in Transportation is holding its kickoff event Tuesday, February 28th! Guest speaker Alexis Lantz of the LA County Bicycle Coalition will talk about bike and pedestrian advocacy in Los Angeles, followed by an informal reception downstairs at Spring Street Bar. In cooperation with the Los Angeles Education Partnership and the East LA Renaissance School of Urban Planning and Design we will be developing and delivering a weekly course at the high school introducing students to Civil Engineering and the Transportation field. The students will be working on a “mini-capstone” project, which they will present to their friends and guests representing industry. We will be taking a real location and project, understand it, simplify it, and then teach it through once a week classes for nine weeks.
How you can help
We need volunteers to help organize and develop the course material. This is not as simple as it sounds. It will require reviewing and understanding the project documents to become familiar with the existing project. Then a simplified version must be developed, that would cover the core concepts of Civil Engineering, including the structural, geotechnical, environmental, and transportation engineering. Then the material must be effectively communicated to the students. This means organizing the material, providing examples and performing demonstrations, all the while making sure to cover the CA educational standards.
What you will get out of it
A 2 unit technical elective course is being put together for students who want to participate. This is also a great opportunity to really become involved in understanding what the basic fundamental concepts of Civil Engineering are. You can also develop your communication and presentation skills in front of an audience. As the saying goes, “Teaching is the highest form of understanding”.

While politicians, lobbyists and NIMBY-minded residents are still debating the merits and flaws of the approved high-speed rail system that will run from San Francisco to Los Angeles, HSR has been a standard mode of travel in Europe and Asia for decades. Almost half a century after Japan developed the first of its Shinkansen “bullet train” rail lines in 1964, the United States has been slower to adopt this form of transit.
Currently, Amtrak’s Acela Express line from Boston to Washington, D.C. is the only operational HSR line in the nation. With average train speeds less than 90 mph, the Amtrak line “does not even qualify as high-speed,” according to Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica. Continue reading

Time-Lapse Video of Keg Creek Bridge Replacement – Highways for LIFE – FHWA
This time-lapse video shows accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques being used by a local contractor with standard equipment to replace a three-span bridge on U.S. 6 over Keg Creek in Pottawattamie County, Iowa. The $2.7 million reconstruction project is a cooperative effort involving FHWA, the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2). This Highways for LIFE demonstration project was also part of SHRP2 Renewal research which created standard bridge designs that can be adapted to a large number of bridge projects. The design scales ABC methods to typical projects so that the benefits of faster construction and advanced materials are replicated wherever possible. The goal is to make ABC techniques a standard part of bridge construction. In the Keg Creek demonstration, road closure was reduced from six months to two weeks. Continue reading
