ITE’s Eighth General Meeting Recap

ITE Cal Poly Pomona held its 8th General Meeting on Thursday, February 20, 2014. The guest speaker for this meeting was Spencer Reed, Transportation Engineer for Fehr & Peers. You can read more about Mr. Reed at: https://itecpp.wordpress.com/2014/02/17/2305/

Mr. Reed presented on the transition to a successful career in engineering during and after college, providing tips on what an individual should look at for a job. This includes deciding whether to work in a specialized or diversified firm, the personality of potential co-workers, and the company mission values, among other tips. To conclude, Mr. Reed advised members to manage their own expectations in a potential job, to exceed others expectations, and to keep expanding their knowledge in the field.

ITE’s Eighth General Meeting w/ Guest Speaker Spencer Reed

Reed, Spencer Spencer Reed will be speaking on how to find employment and succeed within the engineering industry.  He is a transportation engineer at Fehr & Peers in Los Angeles. He graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in December 2011 with a degree in Civil Engineering. During his time in school, Spencer was able to complete a variety of internships that allowed him to learn more about the transportation industry. Through his education and internships he was able to find a position at Fehr & Peers where he has the opportunity to work on a variety of challenging and fulfilling projects. His project work and technical experience includes microsimulation modeling, traffic impact studies, travel demand modeling, and bicycle and pedestrian planning.

ITE’s Seventh General Meeting Recap

ITE Cal Poly Pomona held its 7th General Meeting on Thursday, February 6, 2014. The guest speaker for this meeting was Monica Suter, PE, TE, PTOE. You can read more about Ms. Suter at: https://itecpp.wordpress.com/2014/02/04/2288/.

Ms. Suter presented on the number of opportunities that students could work in the transportation engineering industry. This includes freeway design, Intelligent Transportation Systems, or a traffic management center. Ms. Suter also explained to members about information overload and how engineers should communicate with the public to minimize risk and allow for a safer drive. Before concluding her presentation, Ms. Suter provided some useful tips for resumes and interviews, such as learning from good and bad experiences, sharing your skills to others, and working to understand your potential employers.

  • T-Shirts are now available! If you are a member and have not picked up your shirts, come by to the next meeting.
  • A Parking Study will be performed on Thursday, February 13 between 6am – 8 pm. Please contact Hector (hlsalcedo@csupomona.edu) for more information.
  • ITECPP is looking for help with the 40th Anniversary Banquet, which will be open to all members and officers, past and present. Please contact Jackie (jmtabares@csupomona.edu) if interested.
  • The ITE Student Leadership Summit at San Luis Obispo is now $80 to attend. It will be on February 15-17.

ITE’s Seventh General Meeting w/ Guest Speaker Monica Suter

Suter, PE, TE, PTOE for the City of Santa Ana, CA is currently an International Director with ITE.  She previously served as Western District President (2008-2009) and promoted the profession with her “Getting to ‘Yes’ With the Public & Elected Officials” presentation.   She manages an engineering team for the City of Santa Ana with 26 years of private and public sector experience.  Ms. Suter joined ITE as a Michigan State University student.   Since then she’s presented/published several International/District ITE papers, and served as a co-instructor for ITS Tech Transfer/UC Berkeley’s MUTCD Course.  Ms. Suter is a Signals Technical Committee Member of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and was an ITE Associate Member in 2011.  She is currently an APWA Associate Member.

ITE’s Sixth General Meeting Recap

ITE Cal Poly Pomona held its 6th General Meeting on Thursday, January 23, 2014. The guest speaker for this meeting was Jonathan Hofert. You can read more about Mr. Hofert at: https://itecpp.wordpress.com/2014/01/21/ites-second-general-meeting-w-rsbite-president-jonathan-hofert/.

Mr. Hofert, the RSBITE (Riverside-San Bernardino) President, introduced himself as a Cal Poly Pomona alumni, and presented about his work as Senior Traffic Engineer for Parsons Brinckerhoff, which included a couple of projects he is working along with Los Angeles Metro. Mr. Hofert also talked about his experience working as a senior project advisor for the Spring 2013 Quarter. Mr. Hofert encouraged members to be proactive in meeting with professionals, participating in student and professional meetings, and attending conferences.
