Spencer Reed will be speaking on how to find employment and succeed within the engineering industry. He is a transportation engineer at Fehr & Peers in Los Angeles. He graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in December 2011 with a degree in Civil Engineering. During his time in school, Spencer was able to complete a variety of internships that allowed him to learn more about the transportation industry. Through his education and internships he was able to find a position at Fehr & Peers where he has the opportunity to work on a variety of challenging and fulfilling projects. His project work and technical experience includes microsimulation modeling, traffic impact studies, travel demand modeling, and bicycle and pedestrian planning.
ITE Cal Poly Pomona held its 7th General Meeting on Thursday, February 6, 2014. The guest speaker for this meeting was Monica Suter, PE, TE, PTOE. You can read more about Ms. Suter at: https://itecpp.wordpress.com/2014/02/04/2288/.
Ms. Suter presented on the number of opportunities that students could work in the transportation engineering industry. This includes freeway design, Intelligent Transportation Systems, or a traffic management center. Ms. Suter also explained to members about information overload and how engineers should communicate with the public to minimize risk and allow for a safer drive. Before concluding her presentation, Ms. Suter provided some useful tips for resumes and interviews, such as learning from good and bad experiences, sharing your skills to others, and working to understand your potential employers.

Monica M. Suter, PE, TE, PTOE for the City of Santa Ana, CA is currently an International Director with ITE. She previously served as Western District President (2008-2009) and promoted the profession with her “Getting to ‘Yes’ With the Public & Elected Officials” presentation. She manages an engineering team for the City of Santa Ana with 26 years of private and public sector experience. Ms. Suter joined ITE as a Michigan State University student. Since then she’s presented/published several International/District ITE papers, and served as a co-instructor for ITS Tech Transfer/UC Berkeley’s MUTCD Course. Ms. Suter is a Signals Technical Committee Member of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and was an ITE Associate Member in 2011. She is currently an APWA Associate Member.

Mr. Hofert, the RSBITE (Riverside-San Bernardino) President, introduced himself as a Cal Poly Pomona alumni, and presented about his work as Senior Traffic Engineer for Parsons Brinckerhoff, which included a couple of projects he is working along with Los Angeles Metro. Mr. Hofert also talked about his experience working as a senior project advisor for the Spring 2013 Quarter. Mr. Hofert encouraged members to be proactive in meeting with professionals, participating in student and professional meetings, and attending conferences.

ITE’s general meeting is Thursday, January 23rd during U-hour (12-1PM), in the Transpo Lab (17-2646). We will be hosting Jonathan Hofert as our guest speaker. He will be discussing his path to becoming President of the Riverside San Bernardino section of ITE (RSBITE) Section and his current Transit related project he is currently working on (Expo2 LRT and Metro IRWL). Jonathan is an engineer with 7 years of experience in traffic and transportation engineering design, he started off by working as an Intern for the City of Corona in 2003, and then he worked for RBF Consulting and now he is working for Parsons Brinckerhoff as a senior engineer in the traffic engineering group. I joined ITE after graduating from Cal Poly Pomona, with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis in Transportation. I continued my education at Cal Poly Pomona by receiving a master’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Transportation. His passion for Cal Poly did not stop at two degrees, he continues is a part time lecturer at Cal Poly Pomona teaching such classes as Highway Lab and advising senior projects. He is familiar with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and various Southern California counties’ and cities’ design standards, guidelines, rules and regulations, which he acquired while working on transportation projects throughout the region. Among the many tasks he has performed are traffic design, transportation planning and traffic studies, transportation safety related research, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) design, highway geometric design, and construction management services. Jonathan’s traffic and transportation detailed expertise includes traffic signal, traffic control, signing/striping, signal timing, signal/stop/lighting warrant analysis, and lighting design. In addition to his engineering expertise, Jonathan is proficient in using a variety of traffic and civil engineering software.
ITE Cal Poly Pomona held its 5th General Meeting on Thursday, January 9, 2014. The guest speakers for the meeting were three recent graduates from Cal Poly Pomona: Daniel David, Jr., Jesse Morton, and Said Yahya. Each speaker talked about their experience in Transportation Engineering during and after their undergraduate studies. Daniel, who is an Civil Associate for RBF Consulting, lectured about his time as an intern for Riverside County Transportation and RBF, as well as some of the current projects he is working on, such as an interchange improvement of I-10/Jefferson in Indio, CA. Jesse, a Cost Engineer at Parsons, presented on improving the SR-91 corridor, in which he is responsible for budgeting, charting and tracking, invoicing, and reporting. Said, an Associate Engineer at Parsons, informed the audience about his contribution to the 71/91 Interchange Project. Each speaker concluded by giving advice to students, encouraging them to never stop learning, listen and learn from others, and be patient.

Mr. Daniel David, Jr. is a Civil Associate at RBF Consulting at their Ontario, CA office. He recently graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona with a degree in Civil Engineering-General Option in June of 2013. Though a recent graduate, Daniel entered the engineering industry this past summer with 4 years of combined intern experience at the County of Riverside’s Transportation Department and at RBF Consulting. He currently works in the Transportation-Public works department at RBF Consulting, where he takes on an involved role in highway and managed lanes projects. This week, Daniel will be discussing what to expect in transportation industry as an intern and new graduate.
